Promotion & Relegation Scenarios (24th-26th April)

Premiership Title

Only Celtic and Aberdeen are still able to win the title.  The winners will enter the 2nd Qualifying Round of the Champions League.  The title cannot be decided this weekend.

 

Europa League

The teams finishing in 2nd and 3rd in the Scottish Premiership will qualify for the Europa League, along with the Scottish Cup winners.  If Inverness beat Falkirk in the Scottish Cup final and have also qualify for Europe via the league, then the team finishing in 4th in the Scottish Premiership will also qualify for Europe.  Celtic and Aberdeen are already guaranteed a place in at least the Europa League.

It is currently possible that any of Inverness, Dundee Utd, St Johnstone or Dundee could finish in the remaining European place(s).

Dundee will be out of contention for 3rd place (and a guaranteed Europa League place) if:

  • Dundee fail to beat St Johnstone AND Inverness beat Aberdeen.

 

 

Premiership Relegation Play-off

The team finishing 11th in the Premiership will enter the relegation play-offs.  It is currently possible that any of the bottom six sides could occupy this play-off spot.

Hamilton Accies will be safe from relegation if:

  • Hamilton Accies beat Motherwell.

 

Premiership Automatic Relegation

The team finishing 12th in the Premiership will be relegated to the Championship automatically.  Only St Mirren or Motherwell can still finish in this spot.

St Mirren will be relegated if:

  • Motherwell beat Hamilton Accies AND St Mirren lose to Kilmarnock.

 

Championship Title

Heart of Midlothian have already been crowned as champions and will play in next season’s Premiership.

 

Championship Promotion Play-offs

The teams finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th will enter the promotion play-offs along with the side finishing 11th in the Premiership.  The format is as follows:

Quarter-Final: 3rd v 4th
Semi-Final: 2nd v QF Winner
Final: 11th v SF Winner

All ties are played over 2 legs, and the winners will play in next season’s Premiership.  It is advantageous to finish as high as possible within the play-off positions.  The side finishing in 2nd gets a bye to the semi-final, while the side finishing in 3rd gets home advantage in the second leg of the quarter-final.  Rangers and Hibernian have both already qualified for the play-offs, and are both guaranteed to finish in the top 3.

Rangers will be guaranteed 2nd place (and a bye to the semi-final) if:

  • Rangers beat Falkirk and Hibernian lose to Alloa Athletic.

 

Either Queen of the South or Falkirk will finish 4th and secure the final play-off place.

Queen of the South will be guaranteed a play-off place if any of the following occur:

  • Queen of the South beat Dumbarton.
  • Falkirk do not beat Rangers.

 

Championship Relegation

The team finishing 9th in the Championship will enter the relegation play-offs.  The team finishing 10th in the Championship will be relegated to League 1 automatically.  Livingston, Alloa Athletic or Cowdenbeath are the only clubs who can be relegated, and any of those clubs could still finish in either of bottom two positions.

Cowdenbeath will be guaranteed 8th place and will be completely safe from relegation if:

  • Cowdenbeath defeat Heart of Midlothian AND Alloa Athletic lose to Hibernian.

Cowdenbeath will be safe from automatic relegation if any of the following occur:

  • Cowdenbeath beat Heart of Midlothian.
  • Livingston lose to Raith Rovers.
  • Cowdenbeath draw with Heart of Midlothian AND Livingston draw with Raith Rovers.

Alloa Athletic will be safe from automatic relegation if:

  • Alloa Athletic defeat Hibernian AND Livingston fail to beat Raith Rovers.

Alloa Athletic will be unable to avoid at least a relegation play-off if:

  • Alloa Athletic lose to Hibernian AND Cowdenbeath defeat Heart of Midlothian.

Livingston will be unable to avoid at least a relegation play-off if:

  • Livingston fail to beat Raith Rovers.
  • Livingston beat Raith Rovers AND Cowdenbeath beat Heart of Midlothian.
  • Livingston beat Raith Rovers AND Alloa Athletic beat Hibernian.

Livingston will finish bottom and be relegated if:

  • Livingston lose to Raith Rovers AND Alloa Athletic avoid defeat against Hibernian.
  • Livingston draw with Raith Rovers AND Alloa Athletic beat Hibernian AND Cowdenbeath avoid defeat against Heart of Midlothian.

 

League 1 Title

The League 1 champions will be promoted to the Championship.  Stranraer, Greenock Morton and Forfar Athletic can all still win the league.

Stranraer will be champions if:

  • Stranraer defeat Greenock Morton AND Forfar Athletic lose to Dunfermline Athletic.

Greenock Morton will be out of contention for the title if:

  • Greenock Morton lose to Stranraer.

Forfar Athletic will be out of contention for the title if:

  • Forfar Athletic lose to Dunfermline Athletic AND Stranraer defeat Greenock Morton.

League 1 Promotion Play-offs

The teams finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th will enter the promotion play-offs along with the side finishing 9th in the Championship.  Forfar Athletic, Stranraer and Greenock Morton are all guaranteed at least a play-off place.

The final play-off place will go to either Brechin City or Airdrieonians.

Brechin City will be guaranteed at least a play-off place if any of the following occur:

  • Brechin City do not lose to Stenhousemuir.
  • Airdrieonians fail to beat Peterhead.

 

League 1 Relegation Play-offs

The team finishing 9th in League 1 will enter the relegation play-offs.  Only Stenhousemuir and Ayr United can finish in 9th position.  Nothing can be decided this weekend.

 

League 1 Automatic Relegation

Stirling Albion are already certain to finish bottom of League 1, and will be relegated to League 2.

 

League 2 Title

Albion Rovers have already been crowned as champions and will play in next season’s League 1.

 

League 2 Promotion Play-offs

The teams finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th will enter the promotion play-offs along with the side finishing 9th in League 1.  Queen’s Park and Arbroath are guaranteed a play-off place.

The final play-off place could still be taken by East Fife, Elgin City, Annan Athletic, Berwick Rangers or East Stirlingshire.

East Fife will be guaranteed a play-off place if:

  • East Fife beat Berwick Rangers AND Elgin City draw with Annan Athletic.

Elgin City will be out of contention for a play-off place if:

  • Elgin City lose to Annan Athletic and East Fife beat Berwick Rangers.

Annan Athletic will be out of contention for a play-off place if any of the following occur:

  • Annan Athletic lose to Elgin City.
  • Annan Athletic draw with Elgin City and East Fife beat Berwick Rangers.

Berwick Rangers will be out of contention for a play-off place if:

  • Berwick Rangers fail to beat East Fife.

East Stirlingshire will be out of contention for a play-off place if any of the following occur:

  • East Stirlingshire fail to beat to Queen’s Park
  • East Stirlingshire beat Queen’s Park AND East Fife beat Berwick Rangers.
  • East Stirlingshire beat Queen’s Park AND Elgin City beat Annan Athletic.
  • East Stirlingshire beat Queen’s Park AND East Fife draw with Berwick Rangers AND Elgin City draw with Annan Athletic.

 

League 2 Relegation Play-off

Montrose are already guaranteed to finish bottom of League 2 and will take part in a relegation play-off against the winners of the Pyramid Play-off between Brora Rangers and Edinburgh City.  If Montrose lose that play-off, they will be relegated to the Highland League.
